Research Evaluation 2015

According to the strategy of the University of Vaasa, the university will carry out an evaluation of all its research activities every five years. The first evaluation was executed in 2010 and the second in 2015. The results of the 2015 evaluation will be published in an information and discussion session on 15.12.2015 at 9.30 o’clock in Wolff Auditorium.

Purpose of the Evaluation

The purpose of the evaluation is to assess the research activities and the quality of research at the University of Vaasa from the year 2010 to 2014 and to provide recommendations for future development. The evaluation has the following objectives:

  • to evaluate the research activities and the quality of research with regard to the international level of research in the field
  • to develop the research activities of the University
  • to offer the University the opportunity to receive international feedback on its research
  • to identify the research groups that are currently carrying out research on a high scientific level or are potentially leading to outstanding results in the future

The results of the evaluation and conclusions made will have an effect on the allocation of resources within the university from 2016 onwards.

Implementation

The research evaluation is an external peer review carried out by international panels of independent scientific experts. Evaluation is based on background material and site visits.

The basic entity to be evaluated by the panels is a ’research group’. Panels are asked to give a numerical rating (1-7) and a written statement on four evaluation criteria:

  • Quality of Research
  • Researcher Training
  • Research Environment
  • Societal Impact of Research

Panels are also asked to give an overall rating of each research group based on the evaluation of individual criteria and overall impression of the research group in comparison to other groups evaluated by the same panel. Based on research group level evaluations, the panels are asked to give an overall evaluation of the research activities and quality of research at the scientific field at issue and in addition based on research group and field level evaluations, the university level panel is asked to give an overall evaluation of the research activities and quality of research at the University of Vaasa.

Additionally, a bibliometric analysis will complement the peer review evaluation. Due to differences in publication practices in different scientific fields, only Business Studies and Technology will be included in the bibliometric analysis.
