XXXVIII International VAKKI Symposium

February 8–9, 2018 in Vaasa, Finland

2nd Call for Papers

The VAKKI Research Group at the University of Vaasa arranges a Symposium on February 8–9, 2018 under the theme of Workplace Communication.

Workplace communication comprises many different settings: face-to-face meetings between co-workers, online interactions between experts, service encounters in different professional fields as well as technical or business communication to mention just a few examples. The common nominator to these setting is that they are connected with professional roles and identities and interwoven with institutional practices. We call for papers, posters and workshops that interconnect for example with the following topics related to workplace communication:

  • Professional boundaries, identities, and social interaction
  • Languages at work
  • Domain-specific discourses
  • Professions and the role of (digital) media
  • Communication discourses and practices in service encounters
  • Communication in changing workplace environments
  • Social media in working life
  • Virtual teams, networks and communities
  • Methodological challenges in workplace communication research
  • Ethical issues of workplace communication

The Symposium's keynote speakers are:

  • Ruth Breeze (University of Navarra, Pamplona, Spain)
    • You can be a great communicator! Self-help guides to workplace communication, and how to survive them
  • Wyke Stommel (Radboud University, Nijmegen, The Netherlands)
    • The use of metacommunication in online chat counselling: Three different strategies of responding to advice resistance

Participants may contribute with a presentation (20 min + 5 min discussion) or a poster. The working languages of the symposium are Finnish, Swedish, English and German.

The symposium features three workshops:

As for presentation and poster proposals, please submit your abstracts (max. 300 words) to symposium2018 [at] as attachments (in rtf or doc format) by December 1st, 2017. Please state in the message your name, your affiliation, whether your proposal concerns a section presentation, a poster or a workshop presentation. Also mention if you are giving your presentation together with someone else. The papers will be selected based on the scientific quality of the abstract. Notifications of acceptance will be sent out by December 15, 2017.

Participants should register for the symposium electronically between December 15 2017 and January 15, 2018. The registration fee is 50 €. The price includes the Symposium programme, materials and coffee on both days.
