The VAKKI Research Group at the University of Vaasa arranges a Symposium on February 8–9, 2018 under the theme of Workplace Communication.

Workplace communication comprises many different settings: face-to-face meetings between co-workers, online interactions between experts, service encounters in different professional fields as well as technical or business communication to mention just a few examples. The common nominator to these setting is that they are connected with professional roles and identities and interwoven with institutional practices. We call for papers, posters and workshops that interconnect for example with the following topics related to workplace communication:

  • Professional boundaries, identities, and social interaction
  • Languages at work
  • Domain-specific discourses
  • Professions and the role of (digital) media
  • Communication discourses and practices in service encounters
  • Communication in changing workplace environments
  • Social media in working life
  • Virtual teams, networks and communities
  • Methodological challenges in workplace communication research
  • Ethical issues of workplace communication

The working languages of the symposium are Finnish, Swedish, English and German.

Participants may contribute with a presentation (20 min + 5 min discussion) or a poster. We also welcome proposals for workshop topics.
