University Teacher Helena Haapio was recognized with the IACCM 2013 Academic Forum Best Paper Award. Her research paper ”Good Contracts – Bringing Design Thinking into Contract Design” presents a glimpse of the results from the research she has conducted for the PhD dissertation she will defend at the University of Vaasa later this year.

In connection with the IACCM Americas 2013 conference held in Phoenix, Arizona, on 8–10 October, the International Association for Contract and Commercial Management (IACCM) organized an Academic Forum jointly with the Nordic School of Proactive Law.

The event brought together over 100 contract and project management professionals and academics from a variety of legal and management disciplines from around the globe. The theme of the 2013 Academic Forum was integrating law and contract management: proactive, preventive and strategic approaches.

– Contracts are too often designed not for managers who want their business and projects to succeed rather they are designed for lawyers who seek to protect their clients in case of a dispute. Such contracts seldom meet the needs of today’s business, and companies lose the benefit of an important management tool, Haapio argues.

The research paper explores ways in which contracts can be developed to be more user-friendly and useful for business. Building on research into usability and information design, the paper proposes criteria for good contracts and, with insights from proactive law and design science, suggests how contract designers can bring together what is usable with what is financially and legally sound.
